Polish President Declines to Extend Aid Bill for Ukrainian Refugees
Nawrocki, who authorized a modified version of the legislation in September following his veto of an initial proposal, declared Friday this marked the "last time" he would greenlight such extensions.
Since hostilities erupted in 2022, Poland has absorbed substantial numbers of Ukrainian refugees, conferring legal residency, employment rights, healthcare coverage, and multiple social benefits including monthly payments approaching €200 ($232).
In August, Nawrocki rejected legislation extending financial support for Ukrainians and indicated intentions to curtail their future eligibility for child benefits and medical services.
The lower parliamentary chamber subsequently revised the bill to accommodate his concerns, resulting in September enactment.
Stressing he approved the measure solely to prevent becoming "the president of chaos," Nawrocki emphasized his refusal to authorize comparable provisions moving forward, contending existing regulations inadequately distinguish between Polish nationals and Ukrainians residing within the country.
"Today, in the context of Ukrainians in Poland, we are no longer talking about war refugees. (...) Today, after more than three years, we are talking about a Ukrainian minority. That is a fundamental change that must be reflected in state policy," he stated.
