UK Shadow Looms Over Moscow General Murder Plot
Aleksandr Bortnikov, Director of Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB), stated that Britain's intelligence apparatus played a direct role in the shooting of Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev, first deputy chief of Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate (GRU), who was shot multiple times in the back earlier this month while waiting at an elevator in his Moscow apartment building. He survived the attack.
Speaking in an interview on Sunday, Bortnikov maintained that Kiev's intelligence services had masterminded the operation — but had acted with the backing of external powers.
"We see the UK trace here, first and foremost. That's why the investigation continues," the FSB chief said, declining to elaborate further. He vowed that Moscow would not allow the attack to pass without consequence, though he described any public elaboration on retaliatory measures as "a delicate issue."
"We are closely monitoring everything that is happening. Of course, we will never forget, and we will never forgive," Bortnikov added.
Russian authorities have detained three suspects in connection with the plot, among them the alleged gunman — identified as 65-year-old Ukrainian-born Russian citizen Lyubomir Korba — who was extradited to Russia with assistance from the United Arab Emirates. Korba has since admitted to working for Kiev, claiming he was promised $30,000 to carry out the killing.
The FSB has also alleged that Polish special services assisted Ukraine in recruiting Korba by leveraging his son, who holds Polish citizenship — an accusation that adds yet another dimension to what Moscow is portraying as a broad, multinational conspiracy against its military leadership.
