Poland Reports Two Dengue Fever Cases

(MENAFN) Two Polish teenagers have tested positive for dengue fever following recent trips to tropical destinations, local media reported Tuesday, in cases that have drawn renewed attention to travel-related disease risks.

Both adolescents were admitted to John Paul II Specialist Hospital in Kraków, where rapid diagnostic tests confirmed the mosquito-borne viral infection, media reported. One of the teens has since been discharged, while the other remains hospitalized in good condition.

Hospital officials confirmed the infections were directly tied to the patients' recent international travel, and moved to reassure the public that there is no risk of local transmission. Dengue does not spread from person to person — it is contracted exclusively through the bite of an infected mosquito, they emphasized.

The World Health Organization identifies dengue as a viral illness caused by the dengue virus, known as DENV, transmitted to humans solely via infected mosquitoes. The disease is endemic to tropical and subtropical regions, with the heaviest burden concentrated in urban and semi-urban environments.

For the vast majority of those infected, dengue produces mild symptoms or none at all, with most patients recovering fully within one to two weeks, according to the WHO. However, in rare cases the disease can escalate to a severe and potentially fatal form.

The two Kraków cases serve as a stark reminder to travelers heading to high-risk regions to take adequate mosquito-bite precautions, as dengue infections imported into Europe have risen in step with growing global travel.
